Chettinad Burmese Teakwood Antique Jewel(Dowry) Chest also known as Burmese Actors Chest were used by Chettiyar Community People who were once known to be one of the richest communities in India with good financial background & were great businessmen traders In every Chettiyar family when their daughters were getting married they sent their wedding gifts & belongings like Jewels Silver Utensils Precious Stones like Diamonds Gold Silk Saris etc People(especially women) used these boxes for storing their valuables like Gold Ornaments Precious Stones like Diamonds & Silk Saris etc It is also known to be used by Burmese Drama Artists to store their costume & makeup items Very few boxes are known to be existing today and many have vanished over time due to lack of care or lack of awareness -not knowing the importance/ Historical value that these boxes carry till now No replicas made today can match these boxes which were made around 80Yrs back they were all made by highly skilled artisans who spent hours of work in making these 'beautiful pieces' which still exist carrying their pride
Now coming to the Box - it is made with Brass inlay and handmade floral designs on the outside and the door has brass latch or lever A unique aspect and a very rare kind of piece this box has Four wooden wheels underneath which helps in moving it around easily It includes a vanity mirror handmade Floral work and petal designs carved on wood on the inside of the box and a removable tray with tiny compartments There's also a secret compartment The box must be approx 80 years old or above (Exact age not known)
